Here’s my story ...

Once there was a Collie puppy who was the youngest of his litter. On his first Hanukkah he was only 12 weeks old, and got really excited as he watched his human family’s children opening gifts and playing games. Most of all, he liked the game of dreidel.

One evening, while his family were all gathered around the TV, the youngest puppy picked up the dreidel with his teeth and brought it to his puppy siblings.

As the other puppies gathered around, the youngest puppy dropped the dreidel on the floor and watched it spin. The youngest puppy explained the rules of the game and they were all excited to play.

But they needed something to gamble with. The youngest puppy suggested they could use their food—that is, the crunchy morsels in each of their dog dishes.

They agreed, and, with each turn, the puppies would another morsel into the pot.

It was a tense match, with intrigue and (usually) good-natured trash talking accompanying every spin. At one point, one of the puppies was down to his last morsel and facing elimination, before spinning a ‘gimel’ and taking a particularly large pot of 20 morsels. The puppy was so overjoyed that she went into a kind of frenzy and tried to eat all 21 of her morsels at once, before being reminded by her siblings that she needed them to, you know, keep playing.

In the end, however, the youngest Collie was victorious, and came away with all the food.

The puppies had been so engrossed with their game that they hadn’t noticed something: their human family had gotten bored with their TV show and had instead turn their attention to the high-octane dreidel action.

When the game was finished, the mother of the family made an announcement:

‘Congratulations to our youngest! From this day on, he will be known as… Dreidel!’

And that’s how Dreidel got his name!
