Here’s my story …

Holly was considered the watch cat of her house. She kept guard against any and all intruders, whether they be bugs, mice, dogs, or people.

Last Christmas, on December 23rd to be precise, she was sprawled on the living room rug when she heard what sounded like little feet abseiling down the chimney. She lifted her head and sure enough, a moment later, two Christmas elves were stood in front her.

But before Holly could hiss and extend her claws, one of the elves cast a spell that sent Holly into a deep sleep. When she woke up the next morning, there was no sign of the elves, but some bunting that read ‘Merry Christmas’ hung above the fireplace.

So, the next night, on Christmas Eve, Holly took a piece of tinsel down from the Christmas tree, wrapped it around herself, and lay in wait for the elves. She also donned a pair of Christmas tree glasses—not to disguise herself, but just because they looked awesome.

At around midnight, the two elves again emerged from the fireplace. They scanned around and, relieved to find no cat, started hanging more decorations on the walls.

Holly carefully eyed them from within the tinsel. She quietly tip-toed closer, then suddenly pounced on the elves, trapping both of them under her paws.

‘Who are you? And why are you in my house?!’ Holly pressed.
‘We—we work for Santa’, mumbled one of the elves.
‘We’ve come to spread holiday cheer to this house’, said the other.
‘So why did you cast a spell on me last night?’ asked Holly.
‘Well, sometimes housepets don’t realize that we’re trying to do good’, explained the first elf.
‘Yeah’, agreed the second. ‘And they sort of, you know… try to eat us.’
Holly released the elves from beneath her paws.
‘I’m sorry’, she said. ‘I shouldn’t have made that assumption about you.’
‘We forgive you’, said the first elf, smiling now. ‘You’ve got a home to protect, after all.’
Holly and the elves then joined together to decorate the house. They worked hard all night and were finished by dawn, when Holly thanked the elves and promised to see (and not eat) them next year.
The family’s children came downstairs soon afterwards, and, from her perch on the windowsill, Holly watched them come into the living room and gasp with joyous surprise.
