NORTHWEST:  PUGET SOUND

Puget Sound is a vast inland sea in the Pacific Northwest, weaving between forested islands and snow-capped mountains to create one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in the U.S. It’s home to the iconic green-and-white ferry boats of Washington State Ferries, which carry commuters and travelers daily across its waters like floating city streets. The Sound is also famous for its resident orca pods, making whale sightings a real possibility on an ordinary boat ride. Together, working waterfronts, wild marine life, and ever-changing light give Puget Sound a rare blend of urban energy and raw natural beauty.

Here are 5 fun and interesting facts about Puget Sound:

  1. It’s not just one body of water. Puget Sound is actually a complex system of interconnected basins, bays, and inlets carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age — which is why its shoreline is incredibly jagged and island-filled.

  2. One of the busiest ferry systems on Earth runs across it. Washington State Ferries operates the largest ferry network in the U.S., carrying millions of passengers every year and functioning like floating highways for the region.

  3. You can spot wild orcas on a normal commute. Puget Sound is home to resident killer whale pods, making it one of the few places in the world where people sometimes see orcas while riding a ferry or walking along the waterfront.

  4. It’s surprisingly deep. Parts of Puget Sound plunge over 900 feet, deeper than many sections of the open Pacific nearby — a legacy of its glacial origins.

  5. Mountains frame nearly every view. On clear days, you can see both the Olympic Mountains to the west and the Cascade Range to the east, giving the Sound its signature mix of dramatic water-and-peak scenery.
